I will be making two presentations at The North Carolina Distance Learning Association’s 2011 Virtual Conference: Engaging Online Learners. The first will be looking at three models for online courses and course redesigns. For those that arent able to attend virtually, below is the abstract and PowerPoint slides.
Abstract
This presentation will be for anyone that is interested in developing an online course. I will share my professional experiences from redesigning three different 4 credit hour courses using three redesign models – blended, hybrid, and online. In the discussion of the redesign, I will explain why these models were chosen for these courses and this will start the explanation of what is needed for an online course project. While managing these projects, I had the ability to evaluate the redesign from multiple vantage points – instructional support, instructor, and student – and will share these lessons during this presentation. I will discuss the process that we did from start to finish and include resources and ideas for things to consider throughout the process. I will also share lessons learned both from an instructional support vantage point as well as from the instructor and student vantage points. In addition, I will discuss what things instructors and administration need to consider before starting working on any online course project.
The objectives for this presentation are not to design an online course but rather to give participants a starting point for things to consider as they begin the process of transitioning their course. By the end of the presentation, they will have a better understanding of their options for their course – whether to move the entire course online or just specific parts or components. I will also leave a part of the program for a question and answer period to allow for the sharing of ideas or to assist with initial brainstorming. I think that it would be a fit for the case studies or innovative hybrid models topics and would be a 60 minute best practices presentation.
