Incoming Carolina students are required to attend a two-day orientation session, known as CTOPs, which traditionally had included language placement tests. In order to free more time in the busy CTOPs schedule, language departments, Academic Advising, and the CTOPs office coordinated to move the placement tests online.

Interactive language learning for second language acquisition emphasizes incorporating video, images, and text into the language instruction. The Department of Romance Languages created the FLRCVideos site as a way to merge these interactive components into the language curriculum. The custom-built solution took into account department organization, flexibility and privacy concerns.
